The 5th Citizen’s Police Academy, put on by the Bozeman Police Department gives participants an eight-week crash course in law enforcement.
One of those weeks focuses on the patrol.
One of the main duties of patrol, and sometimes the most dangerous, are traffic stops. What’s inside the vehicle? Are those inside a danger? These are questions that can only be answered by approaching, with extreme care, and finding out.
For the Citizens Police Academy, actors played the role of driver. The academy participants were on patrol. Some cars had weapons, some intoxicated drivers and some were simply routine. What about those weapons? Organizers noted that carrying a weapon is not illegal in Montana, so seeing a gun on a traffic stop fairly routine.
Academy students didn’t always share that sentiment. The demonstration brought home to many the reality that many times law enforcement members are faced with potentially life threatening situations, and yet they handle them calmly, and professionally.
Our KBZK reporters are participating in the Citizen’s Police Academy. For each class, a reporter will participate and report on what happens.
