TWG: Best news I’ve read all day!  Well, except for the one where the judge struck down bloomy boy’s soda grab…… heh heh heh.

Just as many self-identified “progressives” have embraced technology to exploit social media to advance their agenda, while many self-identified “conservatives” are finding excuses to resist it, so too is the vanguard in the political left extending its “community organizing” to take full advantage of all available tools. Netroots Nation, to cite one example, will be holding its eighth annual meeting in San Jose this summer to “amplify progressive voices by providing an online and in-person campus for exchanging ideas and learning how to be more effective in using technology to influence the public debate.”

A case in point was raised in an address at last year’s meeting by Darcy Burner, a committed leftist and would-be politician with a technology background that includes development efforts at Lotus and as a lead product manager at Microsoft, where she learned to apply their techniques to create demand for what they sell — much of it, unsurprisingly, relying on creating a network of dependency, as opposed to the best products. One of the innovations that wowed the libgeeks during Burner’s presentation was an app that lets smart phones read bar codes on store products to tell consumers if the company is approved or reviled due to its stances on “social issues,” taking away the need to memorize which conglomerate products to boycott. That this would be a two-edged sword, where shoppers with different ideologies could take a reject as a “buy” signal, seems not to have been considered.
